Why Video Outperforms Photos for Nepal Sellers

In Nepal's online market, the biggest buyer fear is 'will I get what I see?' A static photo can hide poor quality, wrong colour, thin fabric, or manufacturing defects. A well-shot video cannot. When a buyer watches you stretch the fabric, point out the stitching details, or demonstrate a product in use, they make a decision with confidence. That confidence is what converts. Studies from social commerce platforms in South and Southeast Asia consistently show that video listings get 3 to 5 times more engagement than photo listings for the same product at the same price point. In markets where trust is low, video is not a feature — it is the entire value proposition.

Your Smartphone Camera

Any smartphone made after 2020 has a camera good enough for product videos. Use the rear camera, not the front. Set your resolution to 1080p at 30fps — this is the sweet spot between quality and file size. If your phone has 60fps, use it for products that move (clothing being worn, liquid being poured, mechanical items). Clean your lens before every shoot. A smudged lens is the most common cause of soft, low-quality looking footage. Use a microfibre cloth or even a clean cotton t-shirt.

Shaky video destroys trust. Invest in a basic smartphone tripod — available at most Kathmandu or Pokhara electronics shops for Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,200. Set your phone landscape (horizontal) for most product shots. If you are shooting fashion or lifestyle, portrait (vertical) is acceptable for short-form video feeds.

Natural light from a large window is free and excellent. Position your product facing the window, not with the window behind it. Shoot between 8am and 2pm when natural light in Nepal is bright and neutral in colour. If you are shooting indoors or in the evening, a ring light from Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,500 makes an enormous difference. Position it at eye level with your product, about 60cm away. Avoid mixing natural light and tungsten bulbs — it gives your product an unnatural colour cast.

Seconds 0–3: The Hook

The first three seconds determine whether the viewer keeps watching or scrolls past. Lead with your product's most visually striking moment — the item in use, the most attractive angle, or a surprising detail. Do not start with yourself talking. Start with the product.

Seconds 3–15: Show Everything

Rotate the product 360 degrees. Show every angle. If it is clothing, show the label, show the stitching, show the fit on a body if possible. If it is food, show the texture, the packaging, the preparation. If it is electronics, show the ports, the screen quality, the buttons. Buyers are scanning for anything you might be hiding — show them there is nothing to hide.

Seconds 15–25: Demonstrate

Show the product doing its job. Wear the jacket. Open the bag. Switch on the device. Pour the product. This is the moment that converts intention into desire. You are not describing the product — you are proving it.

Seconds 25–30: Price and CTA
